A unique conference looking at addiction, dependency and connection

Beyond symptom: an exploration of addiction, dependency and connection

7 June, York

Addiction continues to be a serious problem in the UK. While the number of people with an addiction rises, budgets are being squeezed, services suffer cuts and it’s the people who need the help who suffer.

That’s why, on 7 June, the UK Council for Psychotherapy and Changing Lives are collaborating on a conference around the theme of addiction, which will be held in York.

The UK Council for Psychotherapy is the leading research, innovation, educational and regulatory body working to advance psychotherapies for the benefit of all. Changing lives is is a national, registered charity which provides specialist support for thousands of vulnerable people and their families. Together we are bringing together a range of people involved in different parts of the recovery process. We want to look beyond the focus on the substances and focus instead on the importance of relationship in healing and on breaking the impasse in treatment services.

Organiser Andy Ryan who is a UKCP psychotherapist and Area Manager for Changing Lives says: ‘What’s really important on the day is that we’re not going to be talking about substances, we’re going to be talking about people. We’re going to be talking about how this problem affects people and more importantly, how we can move forward collectively, as organisations, as communities, as people who are passionate about challenging addiction in this country.’

We hope to create a space for debate, discussion and learning. We will look at how commissioning structures can be changed and how psychotherapeutic support can be made integral to the whole process.

In the morning, keynote speakers will talk about their experiences and how they’ve challenged existing processes. This will be followed by a panel discussion. In the afternoon, a series of workshops will offer opportunities for greater understanding, insight and development.
